Leading up to the war, many events took place causing the country to split based on personal interest. Although the nation had displayed unity, the North and the South often held different views in certain areas, like states' rights, tariffs, economies, and mainly slavery. For a while, these regions were able to keep their distance, but eventually opinions became too strong for compromise, and by the mid 1800s several incidents began to foreshadow war.
