Robert E. Lee
Robert E. Lee is a name with a large reputation to back it up. Lee was a major commander in the Civil War, and is one of the greatest American generals. In fact, his military leadership was so admired, Lincoln had originally called him to run the Union armies in the Civil War. However, Lee felt that fighting on a side with Northern soldiers would be an act of betrayal (Lee is from Virginia). Robert E. Lee then made the choice to resign from the army and join the fighting force of seceded state, Virginia.
The names Ulysses Grant and Robert E. Lee are often times associated with each other due to both men's ability to take control and win battles. Like Grant, Lee was also quite successful when it came to winning battles. These two men were also the ones who met to make a "treaty" and end the Civil War.
At first, Lee just took part in the Confederate army, and after losing his first battle, his reputation was questioned. For a while, Lee worked as an advisor for Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Soon, in 1862, Lee was placed in charge of a Virginian army that had been formerly commanded by Johnston, who had been injured.
Under Lee's orders, the Army of Northern Virginia was able to become very successful and one of the strongest Confederate armies. Lee also discovered a new strategy. He realized that the Confederate armies should try moving into Northern territory to fight battles. However, the first attack on Northern lands was unsuccessful since the Union had discovered Confederate battle plans. The second attempt at this tactic was yet again failed at the battle of Gettysburg.
Although this strategy was foiled, Lee's witty thinking and battle plans could have been a real helpful tool. General Robert E. Lee's incredible ideas, strong leadership, and valiant actions in this war will be remembered and admired for years to come.
