Ulysses S. Grant
Ulysses Grant is one of the most famous Union generals. When the war began in 1861, Grant quickly jumped at the opportunity of join the Union army. His first position was the colonel of the 21st Illinois Infantry. After four months being a colonel at the Infantry, Grant was promoted to brigadier general in July. After leading troops in the Battles of Fort Henry and Donelson, he earned the nickname "Unconditional Surrenderer."
After the Confederate attack at the Battle of Shiloh, President Lincoln recieved many requests of removing General Grant from command. Only listening to his own opinions, Lincoln replies by saying, " I can't spare this man, he fights."
The Battle of Vicksburg gained Grant his biggest victory throughout the war. On May 1st, 1863, Grant ;ed his troops across the Mississippi river to For Gibson. With Confederate troops unaware of their intentions, Gerneral Grant sent a portion of his men to General Sherman to capture the Confederate capitol. Grant and the remainder of his army marched to try to cut off the Confederate supply base. After fourty- six log days of fighting, Confederte forces finally surrendered.
During March in 1864, President Lincoln evaluated Grant's ranking. Grant was promoted yet again to General- in- Chief of the United States Army. Many Union families and soldiers accepted Grant's new renking and felt he greatly deserved it. The last few battles in the Civil War such as the Battle of Wilderness, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg slowly destroyed the opposing army. In 1865, General Lee surrendered and the war was over. Thus, General Grant was a very accomplished general.
